4.2 Answer

One gets a distressing feeling from looking at the bag.

4.3 Spiritual science on why one feels distress

The bag contains clothes of a dead person. The vibrations of the dead person remain in their belongings that they leave behind. Death of a person means an increase in subtle basic tama component in the dead body and also in their belongings. As a result of the tama vibrations emanating out of the bag distress is felt when looking at it. Tama vibrations are vibrations that cause distress. Please refer to the article on the three subtle basic components of sattva, raja and tama.

The tama vibrations are even more in case of a person who has had a painful death. Here the person died after prolonged suffering due to renal failure at a young age.

The clothes were donated to the hermitage (ashram) of SSRF in Goa. However the tama vibrations were detected and hence they were not given to anyone to wear. If they were to be given to someone to wear, it would most likely give them distress.

The clothes therefore need to be shelved until the sattvik vibrations in the hermitage (ashram) permeate throughout them cleansing them of the tama vibrations. This will take approximately six months to happen.

4.4 Practical application

After the death of a family member, the surviving relatives generally do one of the following. They

  • start using the belongings of the deceased person,

  • keep them in the house in their memory or

  • give them away in which case the beneficiary may start using them.

The above experiment gives us an experience of how the belongings of the dead person are steeped in the subtle tama component. Hence it is important that we take steps to purify them at a spiritual level before we can use them safely. This is akin to first sterilising the usable belongings used by a person who has succumbed to a contagious disease. The spiritual sterilisation process can take many months to years depending on the process used. Only a person with a developed sixth sense can really ascertain as to whether the belongings have been cleansed of the distressing tama vibrations.

Details about some of the ways in which spiritual cleansing can be done is explained in our article on ‘How should one dispose the clothes and things of a person who has died?
